Class Presentations of Responses to John Cage's "Lecture on Commitment"

The Assignment:

Each student will be assigned a section from Cage’s Lecture on Commitment.  Please generate a response in your medium of choice: written, performance, performance written, etc.  to be presented next week. Like Cage's card shuffle devise a random system for organizing or re-structuring your work.  Use this system to change, expand and re-structure your work.
Consider how this new work might be presented in the performance space, how even as a text it might occupy space in the room in relation to yourself and to the audience/viewer.

  1. Hi Class,

Just so you all know, these comment boxes are blank, just begging to be filled with your thoughts/responses/Laffy Taffy jokes, etc.

Our conversation in this digital space will likely be entirely different than one we would have in class, so it might be a good idea to keep a conversation going on here as well?

Have any of you ever visited the site, htmlgiant.com?

It's a "literary" blog/site that functions as a kind of online community for writers...but not like eharmony. The regular contributors post all kinds of stuff, then conversation ensue in the comments box, for days. As Sara Levine put it, "there's no civility on that site," because online comment pages can often breed hostility. Needless to say, it's an interesting place. It's actually where I pulled the Stein rejection letter from, so check it out when you have a chance. You could even start with the interview I did with Ben Marcus, posted there a couple weeks ago!!! But there's really no need to do that.

    All best,
    Colin Winnette
